Ubuntu Server - External SSH Access

Mojo713

I have an old MacBook running ubuntu installed. I have OpenSSH set up and ready to use it as a server for home media, fun scripting/copying, learning more programming, etc. My keys are on the host Ubuntu system on three other computers. It works fine on my local network, but obviously it doesn't work when I'm not on my home WiFi.

It would be great if I could SSH from any WiFi (key added) on any of my machines. I'm not sure how to set this up - I've been reading some port forwarding, static IP, DNS, etc., but I've been struggling to figure out how it works or how to set it up. I've come to the conclusion that the next step is port forwarding.

I'm playing with subnets/NATs for AT&T routers, and I'm not having much luck. I'd love to write a real word on ssh [email protected], but what's important to me now is to be able to SSH out of the home network even when typing the IP...

Can anyone point me in the right direction or provide some guidance? I think I understand the question, but the AT&T UI is a little confusing. I apologize for my ignorance and would appreciate if someone could break down more for me.

On the router, you need to set up port forwarding. Let's say your Ubuntu machine's IP is 192.168.1.10. In the router, set up port 22 to forward to the address 192.168.1.10, and you're set, you can SSH from the outside using the external address. To find out what your external address is, visit http://whatismyipaddress.com. This will remain in effect until your external address changes. Then you will need to look up your address again, either have a static address or use dynamic DNS. But first set up the basics in step 1, i.e. access via IP. Hope this helps
