Lost settings and network, can't connect to the internet

spooky

Had to type this on my phone, it sucks lately, so I apologize for any typos/autocorrect issues I missed while proofreading.

I've checked all hardware (ethernet ports, cables, etc.).

A few days ago, my desktop suddenly had no internet ( running 18.04.1 LTS with Gnome ) , and my GUI settings disappeared, so I couldn't make any changes to my network settings.

I've looked around for help, but can't seem to find anyone with both problems, either one or the other.

I've verified mine /etc/init.d/networkingand network-managerfiles and they seem to match all the examples I've seen.

My problem is that I ca n't restore the GUI settings without an internet connection , and I can't connect to the internet without my setup (I'm assuming part 2 since I can't test the theory).

I checked my logs etc and all I get is

Unable to start network manager

But nothing else helped. If I try to reinstall or just install the network manager or the gui settings, it just does that and then tries to contact my PPA, even if I disable them all and choose to use the DVD.

I'm hoping someone else has run into this problem and can help, or who's gifted enough to know how to fix it. This is my desktop, so it's hard to post dumps and post them, same as screenshots, since I can only access this site with my phone, so please only request them if you really need them.

Reinstalling the OS is definitely the last option as I have a lot of things installed and very custom settings throughout (if you're thinking of this, I've never changed network settings since my last original install It has not changed since April). I know I can back up before reinstalling and restore settings after reinstalling, but I don't know what files to back up, or have a full list of my personal installations since many items are background. (Oh, I haven't installed, uninstalled, or changed anything on the system since the new year, so I can't blame it either.) And I'm sure I'll restore the same network settings as I never know if and when I reinstall nothing, and then loop the state again.

Mr Snowman

In fact, you can set up your network the traditional way - by editing /etc/network/interfaces. First, you need to list all interfaces ip aby . Then, you need to edit the interface normally used for the Internet connection. It should look like this:

*name of your interface* auto
iface *name of your interface* inet dhcp

Then you can doip link set name of your interface down && ^down^up

This will restart your interface and enable configuration.
