Can't connect to the internet on my school's Wi-Fi network on Windows 10

forward

Before I can get internet access, I have to force a portal login page and the page doesn't open because I don't have internet. When I try to open it via URL, it shows up as "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET" on Chrome and similar on other browsers.

Key Points:

  • My Wifi adapter is Realtek RTL8723DE

  • It works fine on all other Wifi networks except my school network

  • All my other devices are working fine on the school network and the captive portal is open

  • I've also been able to connect to the internet on the school network from a PC before, but I can't think of any hardware or software changes that would trigger the issue.

  • My school network is protected by WPA2, I have the password and I can connect to the Wifi network without problems, but it says "No Internet".

What I have tried:

  • restart my computer

  • Make sure my Wifi drivers are up to date

  • Open http:// website without ssl, still says no internet

  • Open captive portal URLs (that I know of) in many different browsers.

  • Contacted the school network administrator, to no avail

username

As established in the comments, the problem is (almost always) caused by a custom DNS server address configured on the PC rather than using the one provided by DHCP.

When captive portals block access to the Internet, they block everything including DNS . (In addition to being the default result, it also avoids the problem of bypassing the portal via DNS tunnels.)

Sometimes captive portals intercept outbound DNS queries and redirect them all to their local DNS servers, but many portals don't and just drop those packets along with the rest.

So when trying to log into a captive portal network, you really should be using the local DNS servers provided by DHCP (even if you think they are not working) - using 8.8.8.8 as a DNS server usually won't work at all.
