Access VPN host by name from VirtualBox guest

username

I have an Ubuntu guest running under VirtualBox on a W10 host with VPN. I've set up the host-only adapter and the NAT adapter as suggested in other answers here, and everything works fine. The only problem is from the guest that I can't access the host on the VPN network by name (the IP address is fine). For example, the name foo.bar.localexists on the VPN network, but is not accessible by guests (ping gives "unknown host"). Any easy solution?

This is because the visitor is not making contact with the DNS servers on the VPN network. The only way to fix this is to run a DNS server in the VPN network and then edit the guest network DNS settings to include the DNS server's IP as well. Make sure you only add this DNS server, don't make it the only DNS server, or unless you configure everything in your DNS server correctly, your guests won't be able to see the outside world.
