Virtualbox Linux host: passing unrecognized USB device to Windows guest

chewing gum

I'm running Virtualbox 4.1.2 (and its corresponding extension packs) on a recent Ubuntu 11.10 host with Windows XP as a guest . I have a National Instruments USB-6251 device that I want to use with a Windows guest OS. (because MATLAB's DAQ toolbox is only available in Windows )

NI does provide an RPM-based driver installer , but the installer is giving me a headache because it can't find GLIBC due to "RPM database not populated", and when I bypass the installer --nodepsoptions error , it fails to show 3.0 The kernel is not supported, I need the 2.6 kernel. At least because of these two hurdles, I'd rather not waste more time trying to install Linux drivers when I don't need to use the device on Linux.

Display the device at runtime aslsusb

Bus 002 Device 008: ID 3923:72a0 National Instruments Corp.

Running it lsusb -d 3923: -vreturns a bunch of information .

However, right-clicking the USB device icon in the status bar of the virtual machine window indicates that no device is connected.

no USB device context menu connected

Who can make the device visible to the Windows guest OS?

I often find answers when I write down questions. Post it so others can benefit from it.

It turns out that the problem wasn't that Linux didn't recognize the device as I initially thought, it was just that my users generally didn't have enough permissions to access USB devices. running

usermod -a -G vboxusers username

Following Virtualbox's suggestion, then logging in and out, got it to work.
