Can't SSH to Debian VM from Ubuntu

burakcan.yurttutan

I can't connect to Debian 9 Server from Ubuntu OS.

  • Debian 9 is a Virtualbox VM.
  • I modified sshd_configand added new user server1on deb server .
  • The Openssh server is setup on the deb server.
  • Deb server is listening on 0.0.0.0 and -p 22.

Although the password is correct, the ssh result is permission denied (public key, password). Shared at:

Because you're using an IP address of 0.0.0.0, you're not actually connecting to a Debian server, but back to a system starting with Ubuntu - you're actually doing the equivalent ssh localhost.

If a server reports its IP address as 0.0.0.0, it means that the server's network interface has not been configured and is not yet available. You should probably use the VirtualBox console to access the Debian system and check its network configuration.

The first line is the local version string of the SSH client:

OpenSSH_7.6p1 Ubuntu-4, OpenSSL 1.0.2n 7 Dec 2017

Once the connection is established and the SSH client has loaded the key file, it will report the remote endpoint's version string:

debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_7.6p1 Ubuntu-4

Pay attention to what it says Ubuntu-4. When connected to the latest Debian 9 system (as of today), the remote version report should look like this:

debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_7.4p1 Debian-10+deb9u3

This shows that you are connecting to an Ubuntu system, not a Debian system.
