Check if property value is null or empty

I'm having trouble processing JSON data with PHP in Oracle RightNow CRM. Example json is included below. When I try to check the if condition, the data contained in the "person.private_email" property only evaluates to true if some data is present. If the property has no data, no action is taken. I don't get any errors at all. What's the best way to check if a property contains no data?

To check if it's empty, enough to check if it's empty, it's better to strip the string, because if you use a function to check for empty space, spaces are treated as characters .isset()trim()empty()
